◄ Maldwyn- I Will Share Your Road; ATLANTA /Open Sleep was a precious thing, and moreso to a wanderer; when Maldwyn had lived comfortably amongst his herd of birth, he had not valued it enough. It was easy to overlook something so simple when so young, surounded by family and the safety provided by a large and well-maintained herd; when left to one's own devices, sleeping in the wilderness was harder and less secure. There were predetors, of course, and the constant potential danger of other horses-- though by inclination Maldwyn prefered to give strangers the benefit of the doubt. There was also the pressure of traveling by daylight (or, in desert, at night), and the strictness of that schedule was far more compelling than any artificially imposed by training and rollcalls in his previous home.
Thus, as a wanderer, Mal found himself doing something he'd've never done as a colt in his homeland: rising early, before the sun. There was a strange peace to it; the world was soft-edged, in those small hours before the sun rose. The world was coated in dew, slightly chilly from the several hours bereft of naturally lighting, whih was literally warm (particularly when you were a black-coated stallion, whose soft fur absorbed every ounce of heat the sun put out). As light rose slowly, staining the sky soft yellows and peaches, color would slowly leech back into the world. It was lovely to behold, and twice-so here, in this strangely picturesque land in which Mal found himself.
He'd reached this territory late at night, but the sky had been clear and the night fairly warmish, as it was properly into spring now. He'd thus wandered late, and hadn't got a good look at these territories he'd found himself in- something he was rectifying now. Indeed, as light and color spread itself back over the world, he was finding these apparently-plain-looking grasslands to be a riot of blues and greens and other colors, speckled in the distance with moving dots that were probably deer-- healthy herds, large ones, but ones that kept their distance from him, a stranger and a tresspasser in these lands.
"Antigone!" he breathed, as he absorbed this sight properly for the first time, moments after waking. The small pressure on his back that his white raven, who-- from the sounds of her drowsy croak-- had still been sleeping, shifted its weight. "Look, sweet girl. This place is beautiful!"
It was, and Antigone probably agreed, but at this hour of morning the white raven was less inclined to admire the surroundings and more inclined to drowse grumpily. She stretched her wings out and then hopped up the gentle slope of his back, coming to settle on his shoulders, ignoring the dark haze that rose from there as she blinked owlishly around in the growing light.

Atlanta was no stranger to the sunrise nor to the way the color burst the black sky open and spilled its light onto the once dark lands. It was a ritual for the Alphess to walk the lands as the sun rose, normally she would have made her way up to the Myriad Pillar to watch the crystals catch the light, but she felt it a good morning to spend in the valley among the deer and the rest of her herd. The mornings had warmed considerably since her arrival a month ago now that spring was in full bloom and Atlanta relished the warmth on her hide as the sunlight trailed behind her. She let her violet blue pools scan the horizon line, always wary of the wolves that lurked the edges of her territory. It would be in the herds best interest to appoint a few guards to keep an eye on the woods edge and alert the herd of predators and new comers alike.
A hoot could be heard overhead and Atlanta turned her head skyward, eyeing her companion Rhys. The tawny barn owl flew a few yards ahead, and he seemed to see something that Atlanta couldn’t yet see. The alabaster mare quickened her pace to leisurely trot, slipping silently and gracefully through the blue green foliage, the tendrils lapping at her delicate legs like the ocean does the shore. The breeze brought an unfamiliar scent to her nares and she inhaled, it was equine but it wasn’t a scent she was familiar with, none from her herd at least. Curious she trekked forward, her eyes landing finally on the black brute and an alabaster avian. Rhys was already circling over the pair, cooing gently his curiosity seemingly peeked as well. As she drew near she slowed to a walk, observing the duo, the stallion seemed to have a blue haze rising off his back and some strange growthlike marking the mare had never seen before.
She spoke as she arrived in front of the newcomers, dipping her head low in greeting “’Lo. Welcome to Halcyon. It’s a fine morning to see the meadows.” She offered a warm a smile that made her violet blue eyes crinkle at the corners. It made her proud and happy to welcome anyone into her lands, so long as they wished it no ill will.

◄ Maldwyn- I Will Share Your Road; ATLANTA /Open Maldwyn, watching the moving specks of large deer herds moving in the distance, was first to notice the white shape of a newcomer; Antigone, sleepier, took a few seconds longer to notice the strangers, and what she noticed was the owl-- another being of the sky, and, further, another of the sort to bond with the race of horses. Antigone called out first, opening her wings and taking flight with a set of croak aimed at the owl. They were birds, and birds greeted each other in the air.
Feeling no such obligation, Maldwyn simply stood where he was and watched the pale stranger approached; she was moving with intention, but not charging, which he'd've expected if she meant him any harm or something. Besides, who could have cruel intention on such a beautiful morning in such beautiful, rich lands? There were clearly enough resources for horse herds here, with as much grass as was visible and as populous as the non-horse herds were.
Indeed, the stranger greeted him warmly, and he smiled in response, dipping his head in a polite greeting bow."It is, indeed! Antigone and I were just admiring these meadows." he said, nodding to the raven above him, "I am Maldwyn. Your owl is lovely." Most of his peers in his last herd had preferred larger ground-bound predators, imposing and fierce as they were-- they had gently teased Maldwyn for his fondness for the absolutely spoiled white raven who spent as much time surveying the world from his back as she did the sky. Mal had laughed that off, but he had a fondness for bird companions, and it warmed him to see that he wasn't the only one.
He'd picked up on a phrase, and so, with interest, he surveyed the surroundings and looked back at the pale stranger curiously. "Halcyon." he repeated, "In that case, please forgive me for trespassing. I was not aware these were owned lands." The stranger didn't seem offended, so Mal wasn't concerned that he was about to be chased off for setting hoof where it wasn't welcome, but politeness dictated this response regardless, and a certain amount of gratitude that his trespassing had been greeted graciously instead of violently. That, he had found, was another unexpected trouble of wandering: in unfamiliar lands, he no longer knew the territories, had never memorized which arbitrarily shaped patches of land were claimed by his herd or their neighbors, and the danger of accidentally going where you weren't welcome in ignorance was greater.
But it was no wonder, really, that this place was claimed: somewhere as lush and as beautiful as this was made to be a herd's land, and would benefit from the oversight of a herd to keep it lush and prosperous.

She turned her gaze skyward to watch the birds meet in the air. She often wished she had wings of her own, in only to experience the wind moving gracefully through feathers, lifting her as she were weightless. Rhys let out his own cry to the white crow that rose to meet him. He seemed thrilled about another avian to interact with. Atlanta had noted that a few other her herd members also had winged companions and it was nice to come across another.
Smooth vocals caught the ivory mares attention, her violet blue pools meeting this newcomers deep blue ones. "It is, indeed! Antigone and I were just admiring these meadows." she kept her auds on him as he continued "I am Maldwyn. Your owl is lovely." The compliment brought a quick smile to her features, beaming with a bit of pride. She had always thought Rhys to be a beautiful creature and with as much as the owl groomed himself and strutted about it was possible he did as well. “Thank you Maldwyn. I’m sure Rhys would appreciate the compliment, he has a bit of an ego” a small laugh escaped her maw and Rhys swooped low and picked up some of her mane in his talons playfully, indicating he had indeed heard her. Taking flight again to meet the white bird he left the pair alone. “Maldwyn and Antigone” she mused “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintances.”
She kept her eyes on Maldwyn as he surveyed the lands, listening carefully as he turned his attention back to her and spoke. "Halcyon. In that case, please forgive me for trespassing. I was not aware these were owned lands." Amusement sparkled softly in her eyes as she took in his words. It was a strange notion to think of Halcyon as being ‘owned’ and as Alphess she did not see it that way. Halcyon was a place to be shared and enjoyed, not coveted. Her voice was gentle and level as she spoke “Oh, dear, there is no need for apologies. Halcyon is a safe haven, open to any who are in need of a home or a place to stay while passing through. I suppose I should introduce myself.” She paused, it was still stranger for her to introduce herself as the ruler of these lands and it humbled her each time she spoke of it “I am Atlanta, the Alphess of Halcyon. You are welcome to stay for as long as you wish, I only wish to know what brings you here.”

◄ Maldwyn- I Will Share Your Road; ATLANTA /Open Score one of politeness; learning that he was in a herd territory was always a somewhat tense revelation, as you could never be sure what that herd's attitude was to outsiders-- he'd heard stories, since he'd been considering being a knight before the resources grew slim, of all manner of nightmarish strangers, who would take prisoners for the crime of setting hoof where it didn't belong. These strangers, thankfully, did not seem so inclined-- the stories could remain where they were, in the blissful realm of ignorance and imagination. He smiled gratefully nonetheless, and nodded at Atlanta's commentary.
"Likewise." he responded, to the greeting, and then nodded at the birds overhead. "Ego is a trait of the flighted races, I think. But one well-earned. Antigone certainly likes to hear how pretty she is." Which was fine, as Maldwyn enjoyed telling her quite frequently.
The term Alphess (and the herd's outlook, if he confessed it) were both very interesting to him; having grown in a traditional equine monarchy, he had very little experience with alternate systems of government: that was part of the benefit of traveling after all, the thing that sweetened the bittersweet knowledge that his homeland could no longer support him. "How kind of you all." he said, very sincerely, before the mildly-confused curiosity showed on his face at the title, "Though I must confess unfamiliarity with the term 'Alphess'; is it like king?" His tone made it clear that he meant no offense by the question, that there was no judgment-- just truly an alien concept. He very vaguely remembered hearing the term before, in reference to packs of wolves and that like, by his fellow knight-seeking colts who wished for a larger, predatory companion. But that had been explained to him as "You know, king of the wolves, right? Wouldn't that be grand, to have one of those as a friend," and Atlanta's term seemed to suggest some different connotation there.
He realized a second later tha the hadn't answered the implied question in his confusion, and smiled slightly sheepishly. "Just a wanderer, kind Alphess." (IF it was her title, he might as well use it, even if he worried that his use of the alien word was grammatically incorrect or contextually inappropriate or something.) "A blight has struck the lands of my birth, so there was not enough food for everyone. I volunteered to find my fortunes elsewhere." He didn't say this with any sorrow or regret; when he'd left, there HAD been enough food for the remaining herd members, thanks to the volunteers. IF anything, he said the words with a sort of non-specific excitement. Adventure Was Out There! And he was going to find it, young happy buck that he was.
