Calla was alone again. This was usual; for a long time now nothing changed, and she'd even come to cope with this fate of hers. Her home was long gone. There was no ocean to be seen for miles and like a child she stood, staring into the abyss of early morning skies missing everything she had once known so well. She was always the strong one. Borderline deranged but she had never missed a step, or became nervous. She was the cordial but vicious Queen of the Canyon, a viper in her early years out to acquire all she could. It wasn't like that now. Calla could no longer seek comfort in the lightest parts of herself because they'd all frozen over. Her insides were no longer made up on Jungles and mystery but of cold, winter bog, out of control and changing every single day. She might have been grateful, she'd thrown away every memory of home to be able to stand where she did, alive and healthy. Time had hardened her, no matter how hard she might have once tried to keep steady. Beneath the waves she did not feel so empty. Countless times she would bathe and close her eyes and debate it, letting go, moving into the next life where maybe, just maybe, she would be more fortunate. It never happened. Calla would force herself back to the surface and force herself to breathe. She remembered her father. A single misstep, and right in front of her he had fallen down that cliffside. That night she had almost watched her father died - and maybe even her mother, but he made it. Looking out at the Empyrean fields, Calla was brought back to her first few months alive, frolicking alongside Nerissa and Roulette, the two little orphans and that bitch Elysia. She missed them all, no matter the conflict. She missed hearing her momma's scolding voice when they'd stray too far or be out too late, and she would be higher off daisies than anyone's ever been. Calla did something unexpected then, lurching forward and kicking her heals up. Like a child, the woman danced: Vulnerable, immature; she did not care how she looked because nobody else was around, so she thought. Nerissa

HONEY, YOU'RE FAMILIAR/LIKE MY MIRROR YEARS AGO
Squinting against the glare of the sun, Nessa pauses a moment before she turns. She's been camped out in these fields for a couple days, bumping into only one or two passersby, and the shy kind that never stop to say more than hi - but spring has been beating down on her, and it's time to go. She's been over every inch of this damn grass looking for directions, or civilization, or someone to talk to, and she's found bird shit. There's nothing left to do but move on and hope she finds better luck elsewhere.
Fingers crossed, deep-in-your-heart hoping. Because God knows what she's going to do if that doesn't happen.
There is something sad about leaving this place, though. Of course Bear's Den is still first in her heard, but the week or so Nessa spent wandering this place has left a little bit of an imprint in her head, and there's no complaints to make about food or water - and, a little less importantly, beauty. The grasses are tinged purple and bristling in abundance, sheltered by the rigid, toothy tops of trees, and Nerissa has seen more fauna here than she has in ages: deer with their wild brown eyes, rabbits bolting through the undergrowth, dragonflies in iridescent blue and purple that aren't afraid to settle in the ex-queens many mountainous curls. When the sun sets, it lights everything with an orange fire, and Nessa sometimes has to stop and watch as they sky rolls over on itself, changing colors by the minute.
It's not home. But it's treated her well, so far.
A sudden breeze rushes up her spine, and Nessa shivers, stepping back toward the trees. The wind has picked up all at once, and she's fighting goosebumps as she traipses back toward shelter: slowly, feet dragging, as if she dreads being safe again. Which she sort of does. Without something keeping her on her toes, life is... dull. Not worth it. She's been trying to ignore that mindset, but damn, if it isn't hard. The urge to drown, or swerve off the path, or fall asleep in the wrong place, has been overwhelming recently.
It's fine. It's fine. It's - Calla?
Nessa pulls up to a stop so short she almost trips over her own legs. Blinks, hard, until she's sure that this is real. Her sister, flailing around ten feet away like a little kid, still alive, still happy, here, in front of her face. Nessa's heart pulls up into her throat with a wild thump; a grin breaks out across her face, so wide that tears start to swim in her vision.
Hey, dumbass!

She did not sense someone approaching, focusing closely on where her body landed or turned. For the first time in a long time, Calla was happy. Everything was faded, white-washed memories and her only thought was the splashed sunlight soaking into her smoke black coat. She had no intentions of stopping, either, but a voice broke the careful silence and it rang within her chest harder than any blow she had ever endured. Hey, dumbass! Mid step she stopped, tripped herself forward but wasted no time whirling her curved bodice around to face the immaculate replica of she, herself.
Calla's heart beat so fast that she could hear it thrumming in her ear. Wide, golden eyes took in the other woman's presence and welcomed it. The warmth was no longer from the sunlight: it was joy, it was disbelief and it was love. Sisters, not bound by blood. They were equivalent to Yin & Yang, but she never thought that she'd see her again.
A shit faced grin rippled wrinkles in her velvet maw, relaxing every single muscle and sharply exhaling a cry. That moment, she was unable to speak, but tears started streaming down her face like a waterfall. Calla, the viper tongued woman, if you could have believed it. They were only ten feet away from one another but the smoke black woman shot herself toward Nerissa, snorting heavy from her nostrils and bellowing toward the skyline. It took her seconds. It felt like eternity. She stopped quick inches away from the other girls face, and gently she leapt forward into her twins arms.
"I hate you," Calla whispered, high pitched and excited. She kept tucked close to the other woman as she let tears roll to soak into the others sable curls.
She sucked in short breaths, attempting to compose herself as she pushed away. She couldn't help it, the excitement. "I thought everyone was gone, Nessa. But you're here."

HONEY, YOU'RE FAMILIAR/LIKE MY MIRROR YEARS AGO
Heart thundering in her chest, Nessa watches as her sister stops - turns - and then barrels toward her like a freight train.
She dances slightly to the side, afraid of being run over, and beams at the shocked look in Calla's eyes. She knows this all so well: that face, that stare, the look of a girl who has been by her side practically since birth. Happiness and excitement tingle through Nessa's every muscle. The universe does her good sometimes.
Calla races into her arms, and Nerissa stumbles a little, laughing. Calla still smells like jungle and ocean, still has those mountains of hair, the well-known, exactly-matching shade for skin, the same as Nessa's except for her sun-bleached spine. Familiar. Incredible. They are still young and barreling around the den, bullying the other kids, making up secret handshakes, climbing cliffs, breaking hearts, everything that she has ever missed. She can feels Calla's heartbeat syncing up with her own, a well-known thunder.
I hate you. Nessa grins. I thought everyone was gone, Nessa. But you're here.
The smile vanishes off her lips, all at once. Rain singing off a window sill. Nessa fights the urge to stiffen or give away her feelings, tries to focus on the rise of Calla's shoulder in front of her, on the lilac grass, on anything else. Involuntarily, though, something in her heart clenches.
I'm here. She swallows hard against the rock in her throat. Everyone else is gone, though. Huh?

Calla knew that look like it was an imprint in her mind. A sorrow far deeper than one would admit, silent defeat maybe. She had looked down the mountainside with this look before, remembering all she had lost. But now, look at what she had gained. Her best friend, her sister, her blood even if not born from the same womb. She felt regret but kept it to herself. Her ambergrise gaze catching the others and she tried her hardest to look as upbeat as possible. There was no one but them, it was a shared reality. Maybe Nerissa might have wanted the comfort.
"It is just us," the smoke black woman said quietly. And while she was sad, a moment passed by and Calla lifted her head and stared into the others big blue eyes with a quiet serenity, to where she let a small and genuine smile spread across her velvet lips. She moved into Nerissa again and kissed her forhead. Something within her warmed up, she did not feel so alone.
The skies seemed to open up and sent happy, good vibes running through her body. Suddenly, she did not feel negatively about anything. Calla was brought to a place backhome, somewhere where the ocean's sang wonderful songs and the forests were constantly unveiling it's masterpieces of trees and rivers and nymphs. They used to be heartbreakers, the two of them. And she remembered their reckless behavior those first few summers; passionate, fierce, and all this while she's missed Nerissa's touch most because their bond was forever unbroken.
Calla swallowed and bumped her shoulder into the other smoky black before picking up a trot away from her. "I haven't been here long," she commented after stopping a few feet away from them.
A gentle breeze whisked bleaching locks in front of her eyes. Calla chewed her cheek, somewhat nervously. She wanted to be joyful and happy and dance like old times ... instead, she asked the dreaded question.
"What now?"

honey you're familiar/like my mirror years ago There is some shame in the way tears start to fill Nerissa's eyes, that uncomfortable wet heat, stinging as she blinks them over the rise of her lashes. Calla knows her too well. Even if they hadn't been face to face, she knows her sister would have recognized the change in Nessa's breath, the salt that starts to form in her throat. She knows, too, that Nessa is not a crier. She sobs rarely at most. Over deaths, and that's all.
But when they come, they come all at once, Noah's-ark-flooding type, for days on end, the only time that her familial depression sets in and kicks the air out of her lungs, the electricity out of her heart, the power out of her muscles. This is when Nerissa is not a queen.
And she hates it.
Now is not the time to spiral, though. She sucks in a huge breath, exhales, and shakes her head. Girl the fuck up.
Calla breaks away suddenly. Startled, Nessa steps back, her vision still blurry - her sister is trotting away, dark against the searingly-blue sky, as if something has just shocked her into a happier existence. All wild hair, bright eyes, not a care in the world. Jealousy stirs in her chest, but she trails after, slowly. The grass is rustling across her skin, sun bright, clouds dissipating, and all of this is in stark contrast to her mood as well as what Calla says next: what now?
Nerissa draws to a stop, scrapes a hoof across the dirt. The breeze has picked up a little and she has to turn her head to avoid the gust, to avoid Calla's eyes when she shrugs, helpless. More lost than she's ever felt in her damn life.
Finally she turns back again, peering through a bunch of curls.
Am I supposed to know?

Calla catches herself staring at her twin, feeling both helpless and heart broken. She realises they have both lost so much and she's not sure about Nessa, but her scars burned even now at the mere thought. Golden eyes glint in the sun over head, the smoke black viper turns on her heal and shrugs her shoulder in a half response. She absent mindedly gnawed her cheek, but Calla knew that her best friend had always been strong for her. It was her turn. "No," and the words come slow. She debates, but stopped day dreaming a long time ago. She knows the probability of any of the others returning.
"I don't think any of us are supposed to." Calla smiled then, and it was as genuine as she might have ever had. Getting past all that had happened would be hard but they had each other. Obviously this was what the Gods planned; their fates, while not intwined, somehow came together for a brief moment to allow them a crutch. She tasted blood then, becoming still as she stared down to analyze her bloodied maw, swallowing back the blood. Nerves wracked in her chest, but Calla did not fail to bend her body away from the abyss and back toward Nerissa. She went forward then, seeming to leave all the worries behind her.
When she reached her twin, she wrapped her up in her long neck and their multi toned sable curls sached together. Her breathing was light, though her heard thundered in her chest. Seconds after Calla pulled back, golden eyes catching the others cerulean gaze. A grin curled her lips. Be the change. "Cheers, to new days."
